KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Advancing Equity in Youth Mental Health: A Call for Person-Centered, Culturally Responsive Care
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Amanda Sanchez. Dr. Sanchez will speak on her pioneering work using the APA Cultural Formulation Interview to enhance engagement and skills acquisition in minoritized and historically underserved families. Inequities in child mental health service engagement and outcomes for minoritized youth suggest that traditional evidence-based treatments (EBTs) do not systematically consider cultural and contextual factors. There is strong evidence that current EBTs need systematic adaptation and augmentation to improve cultural responsiveness for minoritized youth and families, but little guidance exists for clinicians on how to adapt in clinical practice. Preliminary research supports broadening standard mental health assessment to include evaluation of patient cultural factors to improve the cultural responsiveness of EBTs and reduce mental health care inequities. This presentation will highlight research that examines the effects of person-centered cultural assessment on engagement in PCIT and the development and initial usefulness of a clinician-facing toolkit to support culturally responsive service delivery. Dr. Sanchez will further discuss clinical recommendations and implications for the inclusion of person-centered cultural assessment to improve the fit and appropriateness of EBTs for minoritized families.
PRESENTATIONS AND POSTERS: There are 13 fantastic oral presentations, in various formats throughout the day with a strong emphasis on clinical skills and applying concepts in your day-to-day practice of PCIT. Formats include lectures, clinical skills workshops, clinical roundtables, and hands-on learning games. We also are featuring a Poster Session during the lunch and networking time showcasing cutting-edge research from students and other pre-doctoral professionals. A Poster Award will be presented at the end of the day.
LUNCH & NETWORKING: Lunch will be provided at no extra charge in the Social Hall. This will be a great time to network with friends and colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere. This also is the time to visit our poster presenters and learn about cutting-edge PCIT research. Lunch will be Kosher (pareve, i.e., non-meat, non-dairy) with some gluten-free options as well.
REGISTRATION: Registration is now open. Professionals can get a 20% Early Bird discountuntil 3/15/25. Early Bird registrants have first pick when signing up for sessions, which are limited in the number of participants per room. Individual sessions that are sold out still appear on the Agenda but do not appear on the dropdown of specific sessions to register for. (As of now, 3/14/25 3pm, the Table Talk and Older Child sessions are sold out.)
SPONSORSHIPS: Sponsors have personalized virtual Exhibit Booths and hopefully tabletop setups at the Conference to share information about their practices. It is a great opportunity to recruit trainees and staff for your PCIT and other programs. We purposely made a long lunch period to allow ample time for networking and visiting with sponsors. If you are interested in becoming a Conference Sponsor email pcit@kurtzpsychology.com.
HOTELS: Hotels in midtown can be quite expensive and we are not a large enough group to allow holding a room block. However, we have compiled a list of very affordable hotels in the City that are an easy, single subway ride away. Please email pcit@kurtzpsychology.com for more details if you need them.
